For financial services firms, compliance is both a cost centre and a critical risk function. AI is making it more effective and more efficient.
Regulatory change management. AI monitors regulatory publications across jurisdictions — FCA, PRA, ECB, SEC, MAS — and alerts compliance teams to changes relevant to their business. This is essential for firms operating across multiple regulatory regimes.
Transaction monitoring. AI analyses transaction patterns for signs of money laundering, sanctions evasion, and market abuse. The shift from rules-based to AI-powered monitoring reduces false positives — which can account for 95% or more of alerts in traditional systems — while improving detection of genuinely suspicious activity.
KYC and customer due diligence. AI automates elements of customer onboarding — identity verification, sanctions screening, adverse media checks, beneficial ownership analysis — reducing processing time and improving accuracy.
Regulatory reporting. AI assists in preparing regulatory reports — from FCA returns to COREP/FINREP submissions — by automating data extraction, validation, and formatting.

What the FCA says about AI
The Financial Conduct Authority has adopted a sector-specific approach to AI regulation, building on existing principles rather than creating new AI-specific rules. Key positions:
Consumer Duty. AI tools used in customer-facing processes must meet the Consumer Duty standard — they must deliver good outcomes for customers. AI that produces biased pricing, discriminatory lending decisions, or poor customer service outcomes violates existing FCA rules.
Senior Management responsibility. The FCA expects senior managers to understand the AI tools deployed in their areas of responsibility. Under the Senior Managers & Certification Regime (SM&CR), accountability for AI-related failures sits with identified individuals.
Model risk management. The PRA’s model risk management principles (SS1/23) apply to AI models used in risk management, pricing, and capital calculations. Firms must validate, monitor, and govern AI models to the same standard as traditional quantitative models.
The FCA has stated explicitly that it will not tolerate “a lack of understanding” as a defence for AI-related failures. Senior managers must be able to explain how AI tools work, what data they use, and what controls are in place. Ignorance is not a compliance strategy.
Operational resilience. AI tools used in critical business processes must meet the FCA’s operational resilience requirements, including third-party risk management for AI vendors.
Risks finance teams must manage
Model risk
AI models can produce incorrect outputs due to training data issues, concept drift, or adversarial inputs. For finance, where decisions are based on numbers, model risk is acute. Finance teams need robust model validation, ongoing performance monitoring, and clear escalation procedures.
Data quality
AI in finance is only as good as the data it processes. Inconsistent chart of accounts, incomplete transaction data, or poor master data quality will produce unreliable AI outputs. Data governance is a prerequisite for AI adoption, not a parallel workstream.
Over-reliance
Professional scepticism is a cornerstone of finance and audit. AI tools that automate analysis can erode this scepticism if professionals accept AI outputs without critical evaluation. Maintaining human judgement in the loop is not just good practice — for regulated firms, it is a regulatory expectation.
