AI in underwriting: faster, fairer, more accurate

The fairness challenge
Faster underwriting is uncontroversially good. More accurate underwriting is more complex. AI models can identify risk factors that human underwriters never would — subtle correlations in data that predict claims with high accuracy. But some of those correlations may be proxies for protected characteristics.
If an AI model discovers that people living in certain postcodes make more claims, and those postcodes correlate with ethnicity, the model is effectively pricing based on ethnicity — even if ethnicity is not an input variable. This is the problem of proxy discrimination, and it is the central ethical and regulatory challenge of AI in insurance.
The UK’s FCA has been explicit: “Firms must ensure that the use of AI and machine learning in pricing does not lead to unfairly discriminatory outcomes.” The Equality Act 2010 prohibits direct and indirect discrimination in the provision of services, including insurance. Claims processing: from weeks to hours

Complex claims triage. Not all claims can be automated. AI’s value in complex claims is triage — analysing initial information to route claims to the right specialist, flagging potential complications, and prioritising urgent cases. This ensures that human expertise is deployed where it is most needed, rather than spread thinly across all claims.
Fraud detection: finding needles in haystacks
Insurance fraud costs the UK industry an estimated £1.2 billion annually (ABI) and the US industry over $80 billion (FBI). Traditional fraud detection relies on rules — flagging claims that match known fraud patterns (e.g., claims filed within 30 days of policy inception, multiple claims from the same address). Navigating the regulatory landscape
Insurance is one of the most regulated industries, and AI adds new layers of complexity.
